Why we're building Waylight

Two developers, one bootstrapped company, and a feedback tool we built because we needed it ourselves.

Jay Rogers

Dan and I have run a two-person agency since 2011. You might also know us from Server Side Up. Over the years we've launched a lot of projects with our customers, and every launch goes the same way. The project goes live, and the feedback starts pouring in.

That part is great. People are using what you built. But right away it turned into a flood of requests, and going through all of it was overwhelming.

What we were using before

We used Bugherd to capture feedback. It worked okay. Getting feedback in was never the hard part.

The hard part was what came in. A lot of it was the same request from different people, worded a little differently each time. A lot of the rest was low quality: a report without enough detail to act on. We had plenty of feedback and very little clarity.

So we built our own

We built Waylight internally to calm the chaos. Every request lands in one place. Duplicates get grouped together, and the list is ranked by how many people asked.

Instead of reading every report and trying to remember what we'd seen before, we can look at one list and see what our customers want most. That's the whole point. We want to be sure we're building the right thing.

Owning your data

We care a lot about people having control over their own data. Feedback is full of support chats, sales calls, and private emails. You should decide where that lives and who reads it.

That's why we built Self-Host Pro first. It's what lets us ship Waylight to you as software you run on your own servers, so you aren't locked into the usual SaaS vendor model.

If you'd rather not run anything yourself, Waylight Cloud will be there too. Either way, you pick the AI: the provider your company already approved, a model you run on your own hardware, or no AI at all.

Earning your business

We don't want to keep you by locking you in. If you stay, it should be because Waylight is a high quality product and working with us is a good experience. That's how we intend to earn your business.

What's next

Most of Waylight is already built, because we've been using it ourselves. We'll release it in phases, and a few sources (like sales calls) will come after the first release.
